Hi loves, and welcome to Notes from The Creatress! If you know me, you may know me as a writer, but dance has always been a deep love of mine, and Iβm excited to have a space where I can share that part of my journey with you.
This newsletter is where Iβll post updates on my classes (local to South OC + virtual for international queens), reflections on teaching, and how I weave cycle syncing into movement so we can honor our bodies through every season.
I grew up dancing in traditional studios: strict, competitive environments where I never felt like I belonged. There was a major emphasis on perfection, body image, and fitting into the mold.
I found these environments to be quite cliquish, and as someone who was a little sillier and freer, I felt out of place. But when I discovered Afrobeats and belly dancing years later, everything changed. I finally felt like Iβd found a style that was joyful, inclusive, fun: still a great workout, but with a refreshing vibe of encouragement and community.
People were cheering each other on instead of judging each other silently. There was room for everyone, and everyone was happy to be there.
When I moved back to California in 2022, I dreamed of building a life where I could dance more, teach more, and create the positive experience I wish Iβd had at the start of my own dance journey. But I kept second-guessing myself. Itβs too late, I donβt have the credentials, Iβm not polished enough. Excuses rang through my brain, holding me back from taking the leap.
Then my husband (a fitness instructor himself) gave me the push I needed. He called me one day and said one of his studentsβ moms was asking about my dance class. I was likeβ¦ βWhat dance class?β And he said, βI donβt know. Just start one.β
So, I did!
Now I teach joyful, beginner-friendly dance classes in the park: no mirrors, no pressure, just sunshine, movement, and community. My goal is to help people fall in love with dance in a safe, supportive space. I canβt wait to share this journey with you here. Thank you for being part of it. π
